MAYSVILLE, Kentucky, USA – November 13, 2024 – RTK Mobile today announced a 14-day money-back guarantee compatible with Carlson Skynet’s 14-day free trial.

“We’ve had excellent feedback from our Carlson Listen-Listen users,” said Jared Trent, COO of RTK Mobile. “RTK Mobile provides a stable multi-network cellular connection, making it a good fit for the needs of Carlson Skynet users.”

“Carlson’s new SkyNet RTN is a nationwide RTK network with outstanding accuracy that’s also simple to use,” said Butch Herter, Carlson’s Director of Hardware. “That really makes it a perfect match for RTK Mobile, because they are both no-hassle solutions with top performance that work seamlessly together.”

RTK Mobile combines the coverage of more than 300 cellular data carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, on a single SIM card. Combining Carlson Skynet and RTK Mobile provides the broadest coverage density and connectivity of any RTK service.

“Having Carlson Skynet available allows users to add a reliable network solution instead of using their own base station,” Trent said.

Carlson SkyNet RTN offers the highest overall density of U.S. RTK corrections networks, with extra RTK base station redundancy in urban centers. Built from the ground up for reliability, SkyNet RTN’s performance is based on highly advanced algorithms for sensor fusion and the most modern infrastructure available on the market, resulting in centimeter-accurate location data in more places.

Carlson Software is including a free unactivated SIM card from RTK Mobile in all worldwide shipments with qualifying SIM-ready hardware. Existing Carlson customers can request a discounted SIM card from rtkmobile.com using promo code CARLSON.

RTK Mobile data plans start at $25 USD monthly for 1 GB of data. The RTK Mobile website offers detailed video tutorials for activating and setting up the service on devices like the Carlson BRx7, RT3, RT4, RT4+, RT5, and RTk5. RTK Mobile’s flexible plans make switching between monthly and yearly billing easy.

RTK Mobile offers no-hassle cancellation; users can easily cancel services on their online dashboard at rtkmobile.com/account. If you cancel your RTK Mobile data plan within 14 days for any reason, RTK Mobile will refund 100% of your plan purchase price.

Carlson SkyNet RTN offers a free 14-day trial and an interactive coverage map at carlsonsw.com/skynet.

Understanding Your Data Usage with RTK Mobile SIM Cards:

When utilizing your SIM card primarily for RTK corrections, exceeding 1 GB of data is unlikely. For limited internet usage on the data collector, plans of 2 GB or 5 GB are generally adequate.

You can monitor your data usage and plan limits at any time by visiting RTK Mobile Account. If you find your usage unexpectedly high, consider taking steps to reduce cell bandwidth usage on your tablet or upgrading to a 2 GB or 5 GB plan.

Specific Device Instructions:

BRx7 Receiver:

Using the RTK Mobile SIM card in the BRx7 typically won’t exceed the 1 GB limit. The BRx7 has no password for it’s onboard WIFI router. This needs a password to prevent others from using your cellular connection for internet and using your data. On your phone or computer, disconnect from your current WIFI and connect to the BRx7 WIFI. It should have a broadcast ID of your BRx7 Serial number, something similar to this:

Connect to that and then go to a browser and type in 192.168.10.1 to go to the BRx7 WebUI.

It will ask for a user name and password. Default are:

Username: admin

Password: brx7

This should take you to the WebUI for the BRx7. It should look like this:

Click on the Management tab and check the box under WIFI Access Point.

Then put in a password you will remember and click on the Change button.

Data Collector Tablet:

Excessive data usage is often due to backup utilities like Dropbox on Windows 10 tablets. These utilities can sync large files without restriction. If you use such services, opt for a larger data plan, such as 5 GB, and monitor your backup contents closely. To check what is using the data, touch the internet icon and then click on Network and Internet settings. Then click on Data usage under Cellular. It will show you where your data is being used from the past 30 days.

In some instances, your device might have an “internet leak” due to malware or a program continuously failing registration. To address this, you might consider creating a firewall rule. For instructions on blocking program registration with Microsoft, visit this guide.

Managing Cellular Data on Your Device:

To control which apps use cellular data, follow these steps: Allow or Deny Cellular Data Usage.

For a comprehensive understanding of cellular settings in Windows, Microsoft provides a detailed guide: Cellular Settings in Windows.

Lastly, consider conducting a virus or malware scan if you suspect any malicious activity affecting your data usage. Malwarebytes offers a free scanning tool here. While antivirus software is helpful, remember that it can also consume data through updates, so weigh the pros and cons of keeping it installed.

By understanding your typical data usage, securing your devices, and taking proactive measures, you can effectively manage your data and avoid unexpected overages.

The post How Can I Prevent Excessive Data Usage? first appeared on RTK Mobile.

MAYSVILLE, KENTUCKY – Dec 11, 2023 – Today Carlson Software begins worldwide shipments of a SIM card, which when activated, includes data service from over 300 worldwide cellular networks. Previously available only in the U.S., the SIM card, from RTK Mobile, works in 150 countries, almost* anywhere on earth a supported cellular data network signal can be found.

“RTK Mobile’s multi-network SIM cards were a welcome connectivity solution when they were released in the United States,” said the International Sales Director for Carlson Software, Scott Griffin. “We’re pleased to be offering the same option for all of our customers, worldwide.”

Having a SIM in Carlson hardware provides numerous benefits: In addition to the convenience of having email and other internet capabilities in the field, tablets with an internet connection pass RTK corrections through to the GNSS receiver. Alternatively, a GNSS receiver with an enabled SIM card can independently get its RTK corrections from the internet.

The RTK Mobile SIM card intelligently connects to the strongest available supported local cellular network, with no roaming fees. For example, in the U.K., the SIM will automatically connect to the strongest local cellular signal among Airtel, EE, Hutchison, Manx, Telefónica or Vodafone. For users in Brazil, the carrier selection includes Claro, TIM and Vivo. (See RTK Mobile’s full network list at rtkmobile.com/networks)

In May of this year, Carlson Software began shipping these SIM cards to its U.S. market. RTK Mobile customers in the U.S. can seamlessly roam between the major U.S. cellular networks: AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

“The SIM cards Carlson ships in the U.S. are identical to the internationally-advertised SIM cards: They have the exact same features and compatibility,” said the Chief Engineer for RTK Mobile, Benson Trent. “Existing customers don’t need to upgrade, they have the same access to our vast network of over 300 carriers in 150 countries.”

Sometimes the RT3/RT4 has some hidden APN profiles that can interfere with connecting with the internet. The goal of this section is to use Skylight to remove these shadow profiles and make sure that only APN left is flolive.net with the correct settings.

Downloading and Installing

Download Skylight on your RT3/RT4 by using WIFI or you can also save it to a thumb drive and copy it to your tablet. Do not download Skylight from the Microsoft app store. The Skylight version 4814 is specific for this modem and you may have problems seeing profiles with other versions.

Install Skylight with default options on the tablet.

Using Skylight to connect to flolive.net

Find the Skylight icon on the Desktop and double click it.

If you are having connection problems it might look similar to this:

Cleaning Up

Click on the wrench icon to get to the profiles.

Now click on profiles and then click on the Default profile. You may need to maximize the window and slide the dividing bar to the right to see the entire name of the profiles. Change the APN to flolive.net (make sure it is spelled correctly and no spaces before or after). Just as you see in the picture below, delete any username and password, PDP type should be IPv4 or Default, and Authentication is set to None. Once that is done, click on Apply.

Delete all other profiles. If you can’t edit or delete profiles, that usually means that you are already connected. Click on OK to confirm changes and exit User Options and go back to the main Skylight App. Windows will repopulate the one with “ProvisionedContextInternetProfile” as part of the name. This is normal as long as the APN is set up just like the Default profile we edited.

Connecting to the Internet

It might take a minute or two, but it should show this screen. If it doesn’t give the option to connect, try using the drop down below the connect button. Some tablets will require turning cellular off and on again or a reboot and then checking the profiles again. There should only be profiles with APN flolive.net with the other settings as above. After it connects, the connect button will change to a Disconnect button. A quick fix can also be to turn off Cellular and turn it back on.

You can now close Skylight and check the system tray internet button to check on the status.

You might be wondering how many sim cards you need for your team. Here are a few examples that can help.

Listen-Listen

You will need one sim card per base and each rover/tablet combination. For example, if you have a BRx7 set up as your base station, and three other BRx7 measuring points with tablets, you will need four sim cards and plans.

The base station won’t need a tablet once it’s set up, but it will need a sim card. The three rover/tablet combo will each require a sim card either in the rover or in the tablet, but not both. A sim card in the BRx7 will use less internet and a one gigabyte plan is more than enough for that. If you use the sim card in a tablet that is cell-enabled, it can use more megabytes, but might be more convenient as you can use websites, emails or internet chat from the field.

Network Rover

If you are using NTRIP or some other service to get RTK corrections, you will need one sim card for each rover/tablet combination you have. In the example below, you would need three SIM cards.

RT5 instructions apply to both the RT5 and RTk5.

When you have the “Connected, roaming” message as shown above, you know the SIM card is configured correctly and is connected to the internet. Follow these steps in the order shown if you followed the instructions here and are still having trouble.

1. Verify SIM is Activated

Login to your RTK Mobile account to see your Data plans and the ICCID number associated with each plan. The ICCID number is printed both on the credit card sized SIM carrier that your SIM was punched out of and on the SIM you put in the RT5. If you don’t know how to log into your account, you can verify the SIM status on the Activation page just by typing in the ICCID number. If it does not have a status of “Active” or “activated” you will need to associate a data plan with the SIM card.

2. Verify SIM is detected by RT5

Even though the SIM card is in the RT5, it could be seated incorrectly and not making contact.

If you are replacing a SIM card with a new one, it is best to start the RT5 without a SIM card inside before turning it off and putting the new one in.

3. Use RTKMobileAPN.bat to set APN

Power the RT5 off with the SIM out, turn it on and power it back off to put in the SIM. Download this zip file containing the batch files to set the APN. Unzip them and run RTKMobile.bat. Go to Windows start and search for “Run” and then browse to where you unzipped the files and choose RTKMobile.bat. You will get a Windows warning screen. Click More Info and the the “Run Anyway” button. You will get a security warning in a terminal where you press R. After exiting the terminal, you will need turn on Roaming. Wait two minutes after running the program to see if it gets connected. If not, power off the RT5 and back on again.

Connecting to the internet using an RTK Mobile SIM card

In the lower right area of the task bar, tap the internet icon (three types of internet icons are circled in red below) and make sure that Cellular is enabled.

Do not be concerned if the 4G control is shown as off. It does not affect the Cellular modem.

The post RT5 | RTk5 Troubleshooting Checklist first appeared on RTK Mobile.
